From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A live action role-playing game (LARP) is a form of role-playing game where the participants physically act out their characters’ actions. The players pursue goals within a fictional setting represented by the real world, while interacting with each other in character. The outcome of player actions may be mediated by game rules, or determined by consensus among players. Event arrangers called gamemasters decide the setting and rules to be used and facilitate play.
The first LARPs were run in the late 1970s, inspired by tabletop role-playing games and genre fiction. The activity spread internationally during the 1980s, and has diversified into a wide variety of styles. Play may be very game-like, or may be more concerned with dramatic or artistic expression. Events can also be designed to achieve educational or political goals. The fictional genres used vary greatly, from realistic modern or historical settings to fantastic or futuristic eras. Production values are sometimes minimal, but can involve elaborate venues and costumes. LARPs range in size from small private events lasting a few hours to huge public events with thousands of players lasting for days.
Terminology
LARP has also been referred to as live role-playing (LRP), interactive literature, and freeform role-playing. Some of these terms are still in common use; however, LARP has become the most commonly accepted term. It is sometimes written in lowercase, as larp. The live action in LARP is analogous to the term live action used in film and video to differentiate works with human actors from animation. Playing a LARP is often called larping, and one who does it is a larper.
We, the NERO Hartford Staff are always looking for regular NPCs and staff members.
We know that many of you would like to play more NERO, but due to the economic climate, it just isn’t in the cards. We are looking at some other solutions to the shortage of NPCs, some of which are not too pretty (such as a mandatory NPC shift!), so please, if you know someone who is not playing to save money, or are doing so yourself, please consider NPCing a few events or for an entire season.
Don’t deprive yourself of the game! NPC for NERO Hartford events and earn your blankets while honing your skills and beating up your friends.
Remember:
- NPC’s and Staff participate for FREE, other than maintaining a current NERO Membership.
- As always, NPCs eat for free, and eat exactly the same meals as our PCs. The free meals include the following: Late Night Friday; Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner and Late Night Saturday; and Sunday Breakfast [plus, on long weekends: Sunday Lunch, Feast, Late Night and Monday Breakfast]. Hot and cold beverages are available all weekend.
So, if you are interested in NPCing for, or joining the Staff of, NERO Hartford, please pre-register for events here: http://nerohartford.com/?p=61 and contact us as set forth below.
Please remember that we need to have an early NPC and Staff headcount in order to reserve the necessary beds and make sure we have enough food for the event, so please pre-register early.
If you have any questions, please contact us at owners@nerohartford.com, monstermaster@nerohartford.com and plot@nerohartford.com.
We look forward to seeing you at NERO Hartford!
The NERO Hartford Staff
I would like to take this opportunity to remind both players and staff about various policies and procedures here at NERO Kaurath.
Plot Submissions:
The Plot Team here at NERO Kaurath is always happy to receive PC plot submissions, whether paid or unpaid. We like to know what our players are trying to accomplish between games and throughout the “off season” so we can work towards making the game better for all involved. All plot submissions will be responded to in one way or another. Some responses will be given verbally or in writing, while others may garner some type of In Game action or reaction at an upcoming event instead.
This goes for both Paid and Unpaid plot submissions alike, with the difference between the two being whether experience is received or not.
Any plot submission requiring a response prior to an event must be made at least two weeks before the event so the Plot Team has time to review it and formulate an appropriate response. If not received in time any response will not happen until at least two weeks after the event.
Transforms:
Any new, upgraded or adjusted Transform received at another NERO chapter must be submitted to plot at least two weeks prior to an event for approval. Not all transforms are accepted in Kaurath as our “world” contains some marked differences from other chapters of NERO. Additionally, some transforms may be unbalancing to our chapter as a whole and therefore not allowed. If your transform is denied, it will be considered “suppressed” (non functional but still existing for identification purposes) while within our borders.
Exceptions may be made if another chapter’s event runs less than two weeks prior to an event of ours, however the transform information must be submitted as soon as possible afterwards for review. If it is not received by the Tuesday just before an event it will be considered suppressed until it can be reviewed prior to the next event.
Guest and Cross-Chapter Plot:
Any and all Guest or Cross-Chapter plot another chapter or non-plot staff member wishes to run while at Kaurath must be submitted for approval at least two weeks prior to an event. This is to insure that there are no conflicts with any other plotlines being run at Kaurath and that module space and any other necessary resources can be allocated as needed.
The Kaurath plot team is not currently running or sanctioning the running of any cross chapter plot from our chapter. If we plan on any cross chapter plot visits, we will send a submission for approval at least two weeks in advance to the chapter we wish to “visit”. Currently, the only people eligible to run official cross chapter plot (on our end) are James, Nia and myself.
If someone from another chapter or one of our players decides, for whatever reason, they are going to run Kaurathi plot at their event please note that, unless James, Nia or myself are there and actually run it, it is unsanctioned and illegal plot! We currently do not have any Plot Adjuncts or Core NPCs with the authority to run anything outside of our own chapter. No sanctioned cross chapter plot has occurred between the last Kaurath event and this upcoming one. If you have gone on any Kaurathi modules at another chapter’s event they were not legitimate adventures and constitute nothing more than a bad dream for In Game purposes!
If there are any questions, please contact the Plot Team in it’s entirety at plot@nerohartford.com or me, personally, at gypsysprite@me.com or gccgraphics@gmail.com and I will reply as soon as possible.
Thanks everyone, and have a great day!
Selina ~ Plot Coordinator
Note that that all players are encouraged to send us plot submissions at any time, free of cost.
Plot submissions help us to track what you’re interested in as a player character, and assist us in attempting to provide the best LARP experience that we can for you the player. Plot submissions can be sent to NERO Hartford Plot at any time. The ultimate goal is to for our players to feel a deeper involvement in the game, and plot submissions of any kind are one way to accomplish that goal.
Just to be clear, we’ll detail the various sorts of plot submissions available to our players. Hopefully this will make the process clear, and more accessible to players new and old alike.
- · Standard (Unpaid) Plot Submission:
This type of submission covers anything and everything you may want to look into, or investigate, or accomplish within the Duchy of Ravenholt between events. This plot submission can be of any length and touch on any number of topics or points of interest. There is no limit on the number of unpaid plot submissions that we will accept per month. - · Paid Plot Submissions:
A paid plot submission, unlike a standard plot submission, may cover only a single topic of interest, or investigation, within the Kingdom of Kaurath. The cost of this sort of submission is $20 and it includes the application of one blanket to the related character. Players are currently restricted to earning 4 paid plot submission blankets per month per character.
- Short Paid Plot Submission – players may submit a write-up that covers one in-game investigation at a cost of $20. One blanket will be applied to the designated character for their actions. A great way to earn additional XP
- Long Paid Plot Submission – players may submit a write-up that covers up to two in-game investigations at a cost of $30. Two blankets will be applied to the designated character for their actions. A great way to earn additional XP.
Staff response to plot submissions of all types:
Players should expect to get confirmation that we’ve received their submission, but should also be patient, and realistic in terms of their expectations when it comes to receiving a deeper or more meaningful response from our committee. Trust that your interest and effort will not be forgotten.
There are many types of responses that you might receive from Plot: you might receive a reply between events outlining the response or consequences of your line of inquiry; there could be activities that involve the character and take place at a future event, though not necessarily the very next one; or you might receive no formal response, which could indicate that the investigation yielded no information (a useful fact, in and of itself).

Hello all you wonderful NEROtics! *smile*
It’s that time again… Bags are packed, blankets ready to go, heaters pulled out of storage and wood bundled and ready for those cold campground nights. You’ve pre-regged and even sent in your production requirements. You are all good to go and ready to roll! Yay for you!!! *grin*
But… before you think you are all set we here on the Plot Team would find it a HUGE favor if you could, maybe, do the following for us:
1. If you have odd or unique Craftsman skills (Fortuneteller/Seer, etc) that the Plot Team can “use” let us know! This way we can have cool stuff waiting for you instead of having to hunt you down at the event to ask!!!
2. If you have a Transform, whether out of chapter or LCO, please let us know and send us the stats along with any special conditions for “popping”, etc. While these stats and this information may have been available at one time it is not in the hands of the current Plot Team and, in an effort to make sure everyone has fun we thought that compiling a listing of this type would make it easier to run more “tailored” plot and stat weekends and modules more appropriately.
3. Anything else you can think of! Our job is to make the best game possible for ALL players. The best way to do that is to have YOUR input!
The email address to send this information to is plot@nerohartford.com and we DO read everything! *grin*
I now return you to your regularly scheduled insanity!
NERO Hartford’s 2012 Season Opener, Chapter 1, will be held on April 27-29, 2012.
We encourage all players, whether PCs, NPCs or Staff to register ASAP.
Preregistration for the event is now open here.
As always, all NERO Hartford events will be held at CAMP CEDARCREST, 886 Mapledale Road, Orange, CT

Also, while NPCs attend for free, you must be a current member of a NERO Chapter and have your logistics person send us your card for record-keeping purposes.
If you are new to NERO or your membership has expired, you will need to purchase a membership prior to playing. Membership rates and packages can be found here
In the event that we reach maximum camp capacity, or we do not get enough NPC pre-registrations to maintain a reasonable NPC/PC ratio, we will not be able to allow unpaid or walk-in (at the door) PC registrations.
If necessary, we are prepared to establish a waitlist, but the best way to make sure you get a bed for the event is to pre-register and pre-pay.
Please remember that all meals are included in the event fee, but we cannot be sure we will have enough food for everyone unless all PCs, NPCs and Staff pre-reg for the event.
We look forward to seeing you there.

First of all, I want to thank all the super rocking NPCs we had last event! We really couldn’t have done it without you all! Here’s to hoping we can rock the PCs world again next time! extra special thanks to our guest NPCs (and you know who you are!) for dropping by to help us out!
Plot Staff has started a special Facebook group called the Kaurath NPC Guild. If you are a dedicated or core NPC and hoping to get some AWESOME roles please contact one of us so we can add you to the group! This is the space where role specifics and “casting calls” will be discussed so there can be plenty of prep time between events!
Super special thanks go out to Jon Hauff… without whom I would not have been able to BE at the last event! You are an awesome person who deserves big thanks and bigger hugs!
If you haven’t gotten your PELs in to us PLEASE do so, so we can continue to work hard to satisfy all of your plotting needs!
Have a great day!
